THE HERITAGE OF THE HOLY
Psalm 61:1-8

It is revealed in the Scriptures that there is a heritage reserved in heaven. The Scriptures also reveal a heritage realized in the heart, furnishing the soul with something of heaven while living in this world…peace, contentment, purpose and faith, to name a few. Evidently the heritage the psalmist enjoys is in his heart. This is a great season of the year to rediscover our great heritage.

The psalmist gives us four heritages for us to consider as we celebrate Thanksgiving 2011.

The Heritage Of Prayer is In verses 1 and 2. He writes, "Attend to my prayer." Prayer is what engages God’s power to act in our lives. There is no greater avenue to experience God’s best!

God not only attends to our prayer, He achieves through prayer. In verse one the psalmist writes, "Lead me to the rock that is higher than I." He is trying to remind us that prayer exalts Jesus. Our Lord says, "If I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto me." Prayer also enables us. The psalmist says in verse two, "When my heart is overwhelmed." This is a wonderful secret for these overwhelming times of which all of us are facing.

The Heritage Of Protection is in verse three. "For you have been a shelter for me, a strong tower from the enemy." That great promise in Psalm 91 comes to my mind. "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." All of us can recall those moments of danger and appearing tragedy when God’s providential protection, through His blood covering, kept us safe and secure.

The Heritage Of Preservation is outlined in verse seven. "Oh, prepare mercy and truth, which may preserve him." We have been preserved with health, hope, and enduring life. The psalmist also reminds us of a preservation of fellowship when he writes in verse five, "You have given me the heritage of those who fear Your name. He then reminds us of the preservation of eternal life in verse seven when he writes, "He shall abide before God forever."

The Heritage Of Praise is mentioned in verse eight. "I will sing praise to your name forever." Surely we all know there is power in praise. As a matter of fact, praise is God’s address. The truth is, the Bible puts more emphasis on praise than on any other subject. God does live in the praise of His people! Psalm 22:3 reminds us that "God inhabits the praise of His people." There is positive results in praise. We praise the Lord in proportion to what we think of Him. The more we think of Him, the more we praise Him. The more we praise Him, the closer we come to the heart of God. Praise gives us inspiration and strength to rise above our defeats!

Have a great Thanksgiving season!
